Descrição:

Nightwish é uma banda finlandesa formada em 1996 na cidade de Kitee. Suas músicas, em grande parte compostas por Tuomas Holopainen. Seu estilo musical é o symphonic Metal. Atribui-se o grande sucesso da banda pelo excelente trabalho dos integrantes nos arranjos e composições de Tuomas Holopainenmas principalmente à fantástica voz de Tarja Turunen (1996-2005), uma soprano muito famosa na Finlândia pelos seus grandes dotes vocais. Os vocais masculinos são executados pelo baixista e também compositor Marco Hietala.

O tecladista-compositor da banda Tuomas descreveu uma vez o Nightwish como "melódico pesado com uma vocal feminino". A banda é considerada um dos colaboradores principais do genero symphonic metal, que abrange bandas similares tais como Epica, After Forever, Within Temptation, Limbonic Art, Tristania, Therion, Symphony X e Visions of Atlantis.

Apesar de conseguir proeminência em seu país de origem desde o lançamento de seu primeiro single, a banda não alcançou a fama mundial até o lançamento dos álbuns Century Child (2002) e Once (2004), ambos com videoclipes que foram exibidos no canal de televisão MTV em países do continente americano, por exemplo.

Em outubro de 2005 a vocalista Tarja Turunen foi demitida da banda em uma carta-aberta para a imprensa e o Nightwish escolheu Anette Olzon como nova vocalista da banda.
